Delphi / Microsoft .NET / SQL Server Developer
In search of the killer project. Available for on-site and off-site work, contract
or permanent. Will travel. |
|
|
|
Objectives |
To work on challenging and interesting software projects on a permanent or contract
basis, either offsite or on-site.
|
Primary Development Platforms
All platforms unless otherwise noted, include all phases of development, from technical
and business analysis, technical and graphic design, programming, testing, technical
documentation, and user acceptance; both in supervisory and hands-on capacities.
|
- Microsoft .NET languages 2.0+ My development work has been mostly with
ASP.NET, WinForms, and Web Services. The core thinking behind the .NET framework is
surprisingly similar to the old Delphi VCL, and I believe this gives me a real
edge in .NET development. I can develop in either C# or VB.Net. As a side note, I am neutral in the debate in which is better. I actually prefer both, depending
on what it is that I am trying to accomplish. Both are better than the other on
some things, and worse than the other on other things. More important than the language
is the .NET framework. My only caveat is that to do any serious development with
VB.NET, then OPTION STRICT must be set to ON. Otherwise, I see the
differences between VB.NET and C# as trivial, and will work with whatever is required. It is
possible to write high quality commercial code in either. It is also possible to
write really
bad code in either language, too (if other people are writing
it). There is a certain aesthetic, an elegance even, to well-written code that exactly
solves the problems with clear logic and structured code. 5 years experience.
- Delphi, all versions, including the latest Rad Studio, and .NET development
using Delphi. Delphi is by far the best development language on the market.
It can be as easy as VB and as powerful as C++. When I have my druthers, I almost
always will select Delphi. It is hard to avoid having a God-complex when you are
working with Delphi. 12 years experience.
- Microsoft SQL Server, all versions. While not really a development
platform, almost any project of any size needs large amounts of data to be useful.
Microsoft SQL Server provides that. To do that well, the underlying data model must
be solid, consistent, and efficient. If the data model for an application is good,
there is a chance to create great software. If it isn't, the software will be at
best mediocre, and it will be a struggle every day to just keep the software running.
In addition to extensive work in the application of data theory and very solid data
modelling skills, my expertise in the creation of views (as simple as possible,
as complex as necessary), writing unexpectedly interesting stored procedures, and
creating suites of user-defined functions, is quite well-developed.
13 years experience.
- Visual Foxpro, all versions. There is still a real place in the world for this development platform. For smaller in-house
database tasks, it can't be beat. It is also quite well-suited for many medium sized projects. FoxPro can really shine when it is used in conjunction with
SQL Server. The tightly bound nature of the language to data is unmatched in any
other language, and makes many things easier
to accomplish. It is also useful as a support platform. For instance, I often use
Visual FoxPro to generate code for other languages. My first projects many years
ago were all done in FoxBase+/FoxPro for Windows/Visual FoxPro. It is hard not to have a soft spot for the language and I
would really like to see a strongly typed
.NET version of Visual FoxPro. 20 years
experience.
